Dear Parent and Guardians,

It is my pleasure to extend a heartfelt invitation for you to consider Saint Alexis School for your child’s education. Saint Alexis School will be celebrating 50 years as an educational leader in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. During that time many students, families and faculty have transitioned through the school. The constant during that time, has been the educational excellence and expectation that our students will excel academically and socially. All of our students are grounded in faith with a strong spirit and giving heart.

When you tour the grounds of the Saint Alexis campus, you will see a wonderful place for children to learn. Saint Alexis sits on a 25 acre lot that holds a church, playground, school, parish center and an orchard. It is a place where students and faculty can work together outdoors and enjoy nature and still be safe.

We offer a rigorous curriculum Kindergarten through eighth grade. Our students exceed the national average on every part of the Terra Nova Standardized Test. Our preschool program includes a variety of programs for children from two through five years old. We have an excellent faculty that maintains high expectations for students. They often work with students after school to assist them with enrichment math and reading. Beginning in kindergarten, all of our students take a foreign language.

Saint Alexis has a strong, competitive athletic program. Our sports teams include cross country, football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and cheerleading. We also have a talented forensics speech and debate team. Our band and vocal music programs are fun, creative and prepare students for future studies.

Happy New Year from Saint Alexis School! Since we are about half way through the year I thought it would be a good time to reflect on our accomplishments for the first half of the year and the goals for the New Year.

The first couple of months the parents and teachers were sharing school history and getting me up to speed on how the school came to exist as it does. They shared the many positive changes and updates preceding my arrival. All of you have worked very hard to put Saint Alexis School into the excellent shape it is in academically, physically and spiritually! You should proud of your “community family” and “can do” team.

As I developed a sense of how the school functioned and listened to input from faculty, parents and students I began to form an action plan of what I could do to be a contributing member of team.

Communication is the key to any successful community. We have faculty meeting every other week. This is our sharing time. We are able to work and plan at least two weeks in advance of deadlines and solve problems before they occur. The PTG NEWS LETTER is another informational source. The PTG team shares news from the school and announces PTG projects and programs that they provide for the students.

We found after running the class schedule that we needed to tweak it to make it a little more user friendly. We added a thirty minute activity period on Tuesday afternoon. During this period we have whole band practice; students go to church to practice for the weekly liturgy; some students get help with special projects; our AIM (accelerated research) students can meet with their mentors as needed and our students can catch up on their assignments as needed. Our goal is to initiate interest clubs such as guitar and poetry.

Because we were consistently losing class time on Friday mornings after church, Father Zywan agreed to move the liturgy time to 8:30. On liturgy days our students get in their classroom and are on their way to church by 8:25. I want to thank the parishioners for helping make this accommodation possible. Many have joined us for the student service. This enhances and enriches our liturgy and opens the school to an extended parish family.

Part of my Saint Alexis history lesson was understanding why the enrollment has decreased the past few years. The Marketing Committee was the fruit of this discussion. They stepped up and, after a few meetings, we developed goals and strategies to discuss Catholic Education and share the rich traditions and successes of Saint Alexis School. Our goals for enrollment for next fall are three full day kindergartens, at least forty preschoolers and to increase the total population of the school (Kdg. to 8) to 300 students. We currently have about 260 students. We have developed a multi level action plan to achieve these goals. We always appreciate suggestions and volunteers. My door is always open.

We always talk about developing well rounded students. To this end we continue to support and expand our vocal and instrumental programs. This year we added recorders to the third through eighth grade vocal music program. The music department has discussed some innovative developmental plans that we will announce this spring.

A donation from one of our families made it possible to purchase a program that will enable us to put our library card catalog on a data base. By February 20th all of our students will be able to select a book and scan it in our data base. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the transfer. We will be working in the library February 6th through February 17th. If you can volunteer just one of these days, that will be helpful. Please contact the office if you wish to sign up.

The generosity of another family made it possible for us to be able to “lock down” our building during the day in case of an emergency. Our teachers will be able to gather students in their classroom, lock the classroom door to prevent “uninvited guests” from entering while we contact the authorities. We practice this situation in much the same way as a fire drill.

2011 closed with a great band concert and 2012 opened with our Christmas pageant. Next December we will try to consolidate both programs into one evening of musical excellence.

The PTG continues to provide options for our students to socialize outside of school. Your continued support and participation in the PTG has made it possible for these programs to continue. Although I am not a “snow bunny”, I applaud those that are. Our PTG has made arrangements for our student to enjoy the winter weather.

The Saint Alexis Community is often defined as a family. As you get to know the school community, it apparent that this is really the case. Many of our students start with Saint Alexis School in Kindergarten and attend through 8th grade. The students literally grow up together! As I move throughout the North Hills Community I run into Saint Alexis Alumni everywhere in a variety of professions. Not only are they proud alumni, they can tell you when they attended and who their classmates were! We are coming up on the 50th anniversary of Saint Alexis School. We will have a celebration for that anniversary. I can’t wait to see all the alumni return for a visit to where they began to set their life goals. Family is always welcome at Saint Alexis!

Saint Alexis- The Man of God

Alexis was a young man who lived in Rome in the 4th Century. He was the only son of a wealthy Roman senator. He left his parent's home to be with the poor and to teach children about the love of God. After some years, he returned to Rome and lived, unrecognized by his parents, as a homeless person living under their stairs.

Alexis is the patron saint of beggars.

PHILOSOPHY

Saint Alexis Catholic School provides students with a Christian environment in which Catholic values are integrated into the entire curriculum. The faculty strives to develop a student centered academic faith community. The academic excellence is driven by the faculty who employ pedagogical methods and techniques based on current educational research and trends.

By virtue of its commitment to excellence, opportunities for learning and growth are provided in all areas of development; namely, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical, and moral. Middle School (6-8)

A dynamic partnership among parents, faculty, and students is one of the keys to the success of the middle school program. Saint Alexis, with its distinguished record of success, offers a rich and diverse educational experience that is holistic, developmentally appropriate, engaging, and stimulating. Students and teachers are encouraged to pursue excellence and strive to do their best.

Saint Alexis Catholic School offers a departmentalized schedule for our Middle School Grades

The middle school consists of grades six, seven, and eight and offers a unique and exciting program that values academic achievement, cooperation, and Catholic leadership. Our academic program challenges students to become significantly more knowledgeable, skillful, organized, and articulate. Our arts and enrichment program helps students develop their aesthetic awareness, creativity, and self expression. Our athletic program helps students make healthy choices, develop skills, and increase fitness through physical education, health, and sports. Our extracurricular activities provide opportunities for students to discover a talent, develop a passion, serve their community, and have fun at Saint Alexis.

Grade 6 Curriculum

-Carefully designed transitional year between primary school and the increased academic expectations of middle school. Our faculty teach the students to assume greater responsibility for organizing and managing their academic work, both at school and at home, while balancing their academic commitments and extracurricular activities. Students are urged to discover their passion; whether it is in the arts, athletics, community service, and/or student government Middle School is one of the most important periods in a young persons life.

Middle School Math (Grades 6-8)

After thorough reviews of arithmetic, students learn Pre-Algebra, including: decimal notation, fractions, and percent; measurement; use of variables; operations of arithmetic; problem-solving strategies; combining operations; and measurement formulas and real numbers.

The Algebra course includes an introduction to the basic concepts of Algebra 1. Among the topics are the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division within Algebra; solving linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables; sets and probability at an introductory level; equations of lines in the coordinate plane; and exponents, polynomials, parabolas, and quadratic equations. Seventh and eighth grade placement in Algebra, Pre-Algebra is by testing results as well as Terra Nova Scores.

Middle School Science (Grades 6-8) the sixth grade science curriculum focuses on Earth Science, which introduces students to features and processes that make the earth unique, while simultaneously introducing them to the scientific process. Topics and principles in geology, meteorology, oceanography, plant life, and environmental disciplines are explored through classroom discussions, dialogues, research, and hands-on lab explorations. Collaboration is emphasized and other skills include: observation, data collection, forming conclusions, and prediction for creative problem solving. In the seventh grade, students study the conditions for life, cell theory, genetics, genetic engineering, and the structure and function of various systems within human physiology. Eighth-grade students learn about the physical and chemical properties of matter, the phases of matter, mass and energy relationships in chemical and nuclear reactions, mechanics, simple machines, forms of energy, electricity, and the properties of light and sound.

Foreign Language- (K-8) this highly interactive class involves conversational and situational exercises, hands-on activities, games, individual projects, and group projects. Students are engaged in listening, speaking, reading, and writing that is integrated with the study of Spanish and Latin American culture and geography.

The Arts

The arts provide a vital avenue for learning and expressing oneself. Students have explored visual arts through various enrichment programs from the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, throughout the year.

Physical education & health (K-8) Lifelong health and fitness are emphasized in physical education and reinforced through class discussions and structured activities. The program in seventh and eighth grade builds on the fundamental skills learned in sixth grade. Activities range from daily exercises through a full spectrum of sports, which include volleyball, flag football, soccer, softball, and basketball.

Technology Curriculum (K-8)

Teachers give students learning opportunities and teach them to use word processing, and presentation programs. For example, students learn how to create and format documents using Microsoft Word. Students also learn to give presentations using Microsoft Power Point. When students give Power Point presentations, they learn to provide to present information and develop their speaking skills. Students also learn to navigate the internet to find and analyze data.

Enhanced Technology (K- 8)

We believe traditional classroom instruction is enriched though technology and our expanded technology offerings includes robotics, accelerated math and reading programs, flat-screen computers, software, and wireless Internet access. The use of technology is an important part of the curriculum, and student engagement is high because students are actively involved in the learning process. Our computer lab and library lab provides students with a variety of resources and up-to-date information to conduct research for a written report, oral presentation, or group project. At home, middle school students can perform interactive science demonstration from the Prentice Hall website using key codes given in their science books. Algebra 1 students can also perform practice quizzes and tests that were developed in conjunction with our textbook series (using the Glencoe series website).

Student Council: Leadership Formation

Saint Alexis Catholic School is committed to developing servant leaders. To participate in the Student Council elections, students must undergo a rigorous speech writing and speech presentation process. Through weekly meetings, our Student Council moderators empower our leaders to develop programs and activities that will improve each classroom and our school as a whole. Student Council offices include our President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Class Representatives.

Athletics

Saint Alexis believes that participation in athletics is instrumental in helping students mature. In addition to promoting the objective of achieving physical fitness, the school makes an effort to develop the important skills of self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our Athletic Association keeps the Spirit alive at Saint Alexis on the field as well as off. Organized by our Athletic Director, grateful to our parents and coaches, we have numerous offerings for our students- Cross Country, Basketball, Soccer, Football, and Cheerleading. Although developing a competitive spirit is important, the focus for all of our athletic teams is good sportsmanship, character-building and teamwork.

Saint Alexis Student of the Month (K-8) Students who have exceptional achievement in one or more of the following areas: academics, athletics, arts, church, or community service.

Honor Roll and High Honors Recognitions

The schools high expectations for students are reflected in high standardized Terra Nova scores and student performance levels. Saint Alexis Catholic School is fortunate to be located in a community that understands and values the importance of education. We have parents who make education a priority in their homes. Our community also values and recognizes the importance of preparing our students to be Catholic leaders in our world.

BAND

The St. Alexis School Band program is operated through the Diocese of Pittsburgh and is open to all students at St. Alexis, grades 4 -8. Most students begin in the fourth grade when they choose the brass, woodwind or percussion instrument they would like to learn to play.

The first goal of instrumental music is to offer children the opportunity for lifetime learning and enjoyment. Inherent in that process are untold benefits: improved learning capabilities in other academic areas, often even leading to higher test scores; improved coordination, particularly of fine motor skills; building teamwork and other social skills; an assumption of responsibility for care of an instrument and of timeliness to lessons; learning to read and understand the language of music and how it can improve our lives; and an immediate "built-in" social network through the high school years.

Group lessons (30 minutes) of homogenous instruments are offered weekly on a rotating schedule, which allows students to be pulled from different class times every week. Every student also participates in a weekly 30 minute band rehearsal, also scheduled on a rotating basis. This type of scheduling offers 60 minutes of instrumental instruction weekly while minimizing the amount of time missed in any one class.

Children's Choir

The Saint Alexis Children's Choir is open to all children from third through eighth grades. We sing at several Masses throughout the year, including 4:00 Christmas Eve Mass and First Communion Masses in the spring. Our choir has participated in the annual Choristers Guild Childrens Choir Festival for the past 5 years. This year, Saint Alexis Parish will host the festival on Saturday, March 5, 2011. In learning music for Mass, the children receive training in music reading, singing and liturgy. We also ring hand chimes to accompany many of our hymns and songs. The Children's Choir rehearses on Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 until 4:15 in the Church.

SOCCER INFO

The St Alexis soccer program has seasons, Spring and Fall. The Fall season runs from the first weekend in September to the last weekend in October. The Fall playoff Tournament is the first weekend in November. The Spring season runs from the first weekend in April (sometimes the last weekend in March) to the last weekend in May. The Spring playoff Tournament is in the first weekend in June.

The Fall and Spring Tournaments are held on the first weekend in November and the first weekend in June, respectively from Friday evening through Sunday. The Tournament is held at Youthtowne Complex in Clinton, PA. There are JV and/or Varsity games on Friday evening and all day Saturday. The Championship games and All-Star SCORE games are held on Sunday.

St Alexis students may begin playing soccer in third grade. A team is also available for the fourth graders. Fifth and Sixth graders play on the JV team, while seventh and eighth graders play on the Varsity squad.

Registration deadlines are Third week in February for the spring Session and the fourth week in August.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT POLICY

August 2011

The Diocese of Pittsburgh has implemented a Safe Environment Policy to address issues of concern in the diocese, especially regarding the protection of children. This policy includes several requirements for those who volunteer in a Catholic School.

It is important to remember that if you plan to volunteer in any capacity, at any time at Saint Alexis Catholic School, that all of the 5 requirements listed below must be met.

ATTENDANCCE AT A PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

This is a national program developed by the http://www.virtus.org/virtus/ organization and was implemented to create an awareness of child sexual abuse and a plan to prevent abuse. These workshops (one, 3 hour class) are held throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh at various parishes, including Saint Alexis Parish.

1.Go online to the Virtus web site to view a list of upcoming sessions.

2.Select “Registration” from the menu on the left

3.Then choose “View a List of Sessions.”

4.You will be directed to select your organization.

5.When prompted, select “Pittsburgh, PA (Diocese)” from the drop down menu to get the list of upcoming sessions.)

6.Once you have completed a session, please forward the original certificate indicating proof of attendance to the school office where it will be kept on file.

COMPLETION OF THE ONLINE DIOCESAN DATABASE APPLICATION

1.Complete the New User Registration information by following the instructions on the application after you have been approved by the principal.

2.Select Saint Alexis School as your primary site when prompted.

•This booklet can be found in the school office and will be distributed to interested individuals at the beginning of the school year.

•All individuals should read the Code, then sign and return a copy to the school office where it will be kept on file.

COMPLETE ACT 34-PA STATE POLICE CRIMANALL RECORD CHECK

Go to www.pde.state.pa.us.

1.On the right hand side of the page, click on Act 114 (Requirements Federal Fingerprinting).

2.Once on this page, scroll down until you see Act 34 – click and proceed to the NON-REGISTERED USER paragraph and follow the steps.

3.This site is online and will give you a link to get the copy of your paperwork once you click on the control number (give it 2-3 minutes for processing).

4.Print a copy of the certificate for your records and then either deliver it or mail it to school’s office in care of Dr. Kuntz.

COMPLETION OF THE PA CHILD ABUSE CLEARANCE FORM

Download the PA Child Abuse Clearance Form from

•Follow the instructions on the top of the form, and mail to the Harrisburg, PA address

•Once clearance has been provided, please return the original clearance results to the school office where it will be kept on file.

•A photocopy of the results will be provided if desired.

After completion of the above items, the school is then permitted to grant “approval” to volunteers. Verification in the form of dates is then entered into the database by me directly for school volunteers after I obtain all needed items. I can not stress this process enough. This means that all volunteers will need to complete the requirements in order to be “approved” as a school volunteer.
